Alva Noto

Alva Noto is the performance identity of Carsten Nicolai — a Berlin-based artist and musician who is one of the foundational figures of glitch aesthetics and mathematical audiovisual performance. As co-founder of the Raster-Noton label (later Raster), Nicolai has shaped the sound and visual language of experimental electronic music for over two decades.

His live performances operate at the precise intersection of art and science: every visual element is directly derived from the sound signal, so that pixels represent frequencies and visual structure mirrors acoustic structure with mathematical accuracy. The imagery is sparse, cold, and precisely beautiful — black backgrounds punctuated by white lines, pulses, and the geometric residue of sound made visible.

Alva Noto has collaborated with artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto (on the celebrated Vrioon and subsequent albums), Anne-James Chaton, and Ensemble Modern, bringing his audiovisual philosophy into dialogue with classical music traditions. He continues to tour internationally and set the gold standard for what it means to treat sound and image as a single, unified discipline.
