Kurt Laurenz Theinert

Kurt Laurenz Theinert is a Frankfurt-based visual musician whose practice stands at the intersection of VJ performance, live painting, and the historic tradition of visual music. Where most VJ practice involves the triggering and manipulation of pre-made content, Theinert builds visual environments from scratch in real-time — a form of live visual composition that is genuinely improvisational in the same way that musical improvisation is.

His custom software — developed over many years — translates gestural input into visual events with a responsiveness and expressive range that standard VJ tools cannot achieve. The result is performance work that has the directness and presence of live painting while operating in the real-time context of electronic music performance.
