Ryoichi Kurokawa
Ryoichi Kurokawa is a Japanese artist working at the precise intersection of sound and image. His practice encompasses audiovisual sculpture, installation, and performance — work that exists in the space between the measurable and the felt.
Kurokawa’s installations are characterised by an almost scientific restraint: minimal in their physical presence, maximal in their perceptual effect. Works like oscillating continuum (2013) use the most economical means — two screens, embedded sound — to create experiences of genuine phenomenological depth.
His research engages with concepts from physics, biology, and mathematics — not as metaphor but as method. Wave patterns, particle behaviour, biological rhythms, and electromagnetic phenomena are directly translated into structural and compositional decisions.
Kurokawa has exhibited internationally at institutions including the ZKM (Karlsruhe), Ars Electronica (Linz), MUTEK (Montréal), and Sonar (Barcelona), and has been awarded numerous prizes for his contribution to media art.
