Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is a culmination of contrasts — the interplay of light and dark, the tangible and intangible, the old and new. The installation combines Sougwen Chung’s signature hand-drawn mark-making with projection mapping and LEDs to create environments where shadow becomes as expressive as light.
The work augments traditional drawing at monumental scale using interdisciplinary technologies. Large sheets become luminous surfaces; marks made by hand are reinterpreted by light, expanding and contracting with sound. Viewers move through a space where the drawing continues around them, activated by their presence.
The piece has been presented in New York and internationally as part of Chung’s ongoing investigation into the boundaries between human and machine mark-making.
