Random International

Location London, UK / Berlin, Germany
Type Participatory Art & Algorithmic Sociology Studio

Random International are a London and Berlin-based studio whose practice centres on a profound question: what happens when human behaviour becomes the material of art? Their work consistently positions the audience not as passive viewers but as active generators of the visual experience.

Their most famous work — Rain Room (2012), first exhibited at the Barbican in London) — placed visitors in a field of falling water that sensed their presence and stopped around them wherever they moved. The piece created a sensation and was subsequently acquired by MoMA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It remains one of the most visited and written-about participatory artworks of its era.

Their 2026 work TOGETHER, installed at Piccadilly Lights in London, uses computer vision cameras and AI tracking systems to capture the movements of thousands of pedestrians on one of the world’s most famous intersections, rendering their collective movement as real-time abstract imagery across the massive multi-screen facade. Individual bodies disappear; collective behaviour becomes visible.

This is what the studio calls “Algorithmic Sociology” — the translation of how human beings move together into visual form. Random International have exhibited at the Barbican, MoMA, Saatchi Gallery, and major international venues.
