VJs TV is the global broadcast network for VJ culture, audiovisual performances, and digital visual art. Watch live performances, discover artists, and explore the world of visual performance.
Studio DRIFT
Studio DRIFT — founded by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta in Amsterdam — creates work at the intersection of biological intelligence and industrial engineering. Their practice is defined by a central question: what happens when natural systems — the way a flock of birds moves, the way a flower opens in light — are translated into engineered objects and systems?
Their answer has produced some of the most extraordinary kinetic works of the last decade. Shylight — a series of luminous sculptures that open and close via industrial winch systems, exactly mimicking the light-responsive behaviour of certain flowers — is both scientifically accurate and profoundly moving. Franchise Freedom uses hundreds of synchronised drones to recreate the emergent behaviour of a starling murmuration in the night sky.
Their 2026 work Wind of Change continues this trajectory: a massive outdoor drone performance in which light-emitting drones form three-dimensional sculptures in the night sky, their formations driven by algorithms modelled on natural swarm behaviour.
Studio DRIFT have exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Saatchi Gallery London, Art Basel Miami, and have been commissioned by major cultural institutions and public art programmes worldwide.
