Urban Screen
Urban Screen are the German studio whose work has defined what “architectural media art” can be at its most poetic and restrained. Based in Bremen — and permanently associated with their landmark work in the Gasometer, a converted former gas tank — their practice operates at the extreme slow end of the audiovisual spectrum.
Where most projection mapping seeks drama and surprise, Urban Screen seeks the uncanny: the gentle, impossible transformation of familiar architecture into something that appears to breathe, melt, or exist in a state of slow, dreaming metamorphosis. Their work unfolds over extended durations — minutes, sometimes hours — creating trance states rather than spectacles.
Their 319 Degrees installation, created inside the Gasometer in collaboration with the building’s architecture, remains one of the most widely cited works in the history of architectural media art. The piece mapped the interior surface of the cylindrical tank with imagery that transformed its industrial geometry into a living, cosmic environment.
Urban Screen work internationally, with commissions for architectural landmarks, festivals, and public art contexts across Europe and beyond.
