Type Kinetic Sound Sculpture Studio

Zimoun is a Swiss artist whose studio practice produces one of the most distinctive bodies of work in contemporary installation art: kinetic sound sculptures built from the most elementary industrial components — DC motors, cardboard tubes, cotton balls, wire — assembled in their thousands to create mechanical environments of extraordinary hypnotic power.

The sculptures are simultaneously sonic and visual: hundreds of motors drive hundreds of small objects in slightly asynchronous patterns, creating an auditory field of overlapping rhythmic sounds and a visual field of swarming, coordinated movement. The effect is both industrial and organic — the behaviour of the swarm resembles biological systems (flocking birds, cellular growth) even though each individual unit is a simple motor following simple instructions.

Zimoun’s practice represents a significant position in the broader field of audiovisual art: one in which the visual element is entirely physical and mechanical rather than projected or screened. The “image” is the movement of matter in space — analogue VJing in the most radical sense.

His Room Sculptures — immersive environments in which visitors are enveloped by the physical movement and sound of large-scale mechanical systems — have been exhibited worldwide and continue to tour internationally in 2026.
