Robert Seidel
Robert Seidel is a Berlin-based artist whose work occupies a singular position in contemporary visual art: the space between generative film, projection sculpture, and expanded cinema. His practice dissolves conventional categories — his pieces are neither quite paintings, nor films, nor sculptures, but something that contains aspects of all three.
In works like Tearing Shadows (2013), Seidel positions projectors and physical sculptures in precise spatial relationships, so that light and shadow become equally expressive materials. Viewers move through environments where the image is not confined to a screen but distributed through space — across walls, floors, and sculptural surfaces simultaneously.
His generative imagery — produced with custom software that Seidel develops and refines over long periods — has a distinctive quality: organic and precise, mathematical and painterly. Each frame is unique, yet the work has a strong visual identity that is immediately recognisable.
Seidel has exhibited at major institutions and festivals internationally, including Ars Electronica, Transmediale, and numerous gallery contexts in Europe and North America.
