Tearing Shadows
Tearing Shadow is a projection sculpture by Robert Seidel, exhibited at 401contemporary gallery in Berlin from February to April 2013. The installation creates an environment where the boundaries between physical object, projected light, and space become deliberately unstable.
Fragments of projection are mapped onto sculpted surfaces positioned throughout the gallery space, allowing the viewer to construct endlessly varied audiovisual narratives as they move. Shadow and light become equally active materials — cast, torn, and reformed across both the sculpture and the surrounding architecture.
Seidel, one of Germany’s most distinctive artists working with generative imagery and projection, has exhibited the work internationally and developed it across multiple iterations. The piece exemplifies his ongoing investigation into the expressive potential of light as a plastic, three-dimensional medium.
