Oscillating Continuum
oscillating continuum (2013) is one of Ryoichi Kurokawa’s most celebrated installations — a monument to stillness in motion. Two square displays, embedded flush into a monolithic brushed-aluminium block, play a precisely timed 8-minute audiovisual loop that examines the nature of oscillation itself.
The work draws its conceptual framework from physics — specifically the wave-particle duality of quantum mechanics — and translates that theoretical underpinning into sensory experience. Sound and image are not merely synchronised; they emerge from the same generative source, as if light and frequency are two expressions of a single phenomenon.
The piece was exhibited internationally at major media art institutions and has been widely recognised as a landmark work of contemporary audiovisual sculpture.
